Memories of Tao
Art Statement
In the photo series Memories of Tao, Merel Galestian translates contemplations into metaphorical and poetic images of nature. Presented exclusively in black and white, these photographs explore the mystical qualities hidden within organic forms, textures, and subtle patterns found in natural environments. Galestian intentionally abstracts her subjects, removing colour and context to reveal deeper, universal truths and evoke a quiet sense of wonder about the origins and essence of life.
Guided by principles inspired by Taoist philosophy—such as harmony, simplicity, and interconnectedness—Galestian's images invite viewers to enter a space of silent reflection. The absence of colour heightens the interplay of form, shadow, and light, creating compositions that speak of nature's hidden rhythms and timeless beauty. Through this series, Galestian aims to connect viewers to an intuitive, meditative awareness of existence, capturing fleeting moments of stillness that gently reflect life's inherent mysteries.
